How often should chimney be inspected and swept?
Once year for inspection, per CSIA and NFPA 211. Sweeping depends on how much you burn; wood flue needs it once creosote builds to about an eighth of an inch.
Do I actually need liner?
If yours is cracked or missing, yes. sound flue liner is what keeps heat and combustion gases away from the framing around the chimney.
Why does my fireplace smell, especially in summer?
Usually creosote pulling damp air down flue with weak draft. cleaning and top-sealing damper handle most of it.
Is chimney cap worth the money?
It pays for itself by keeping out rain, sparks, and animals. An open flue is an invitation to nesting birds and water damage.
Can you convert my wood fireplace to gas?
